Hugo Broos hailed an improved display from Bafana Bafana in their 1-0 success over Ghana on Monday night that took them to the top of their 2022 Fifa World Cup qualification pool.
Bongokhule Hlongwane scored the winning goal seven minutes from fulltime after South Africa had been unlucky to see a Percy Tau effort wrongly ruled out for offside, while Evidence Makgopa also missed an open goal.
But the team showed a high work-rate that was a vast improvement on their 0-0 draw in Zimbabwe in their qualification opener on Friday.
“I’m very proud and happy today,” Broos said. “We have made big progress in one week. When I saw my team play against Zimbabwe, there was no determination or belief in themselves, but what I saw today was a team with confidence.
“We played a very good game, there was determination, the will to win and discipline. That is what I like.

“We have four (points) from six, and I said before that if we have that from these two games I will be very happy. We will see if we can go on like this and make progress like we did this week, and then see where we will end up at the end of the race.”
Bafana are next in action with home and away qualifiers against Ethiopia next month.
